What is Reiki and How
Does it Work?
Reiki is an ancient form
of healing that incorporates energy from the world around us to promote
healing. Reiki energy is non-specific, this means that the reason for an
imbalance is not important for an effective treatment. It works in a way
much like acupuncture in that the energy follows meridian pathways in
the body. If there is a disruption of energy flow Reiki works to
rebalance or unblock the affected area. Imbalances or blockages can be
caused by an illness, injury, stress or physical/emotional exhaustion.
There are many reasons that could cause an imbalance leaving you feeling
sick, sore or just not like yourself. The Reiki energy itself does
not heal a person, it simply induces a deep relaxation and balanced
environment to allow the body to heal itself.
Why Would I Want or
Need a Reiki Treatment?
Reiki can be used for a
large array of issues. Whether it’s a sore leg from an injury, mental
stress from a hectic life or emotional exhaustion from a tragedy or
loss, Reiki provides a way to heal. It is these factors that cause
energetic imbalances in the body or perhaps it is something unknown
causing the imbalance that manifests as one of these recognisable
symptoms. Either way, the relaxing, rebalancing focus of a Reiki
treatment helps to restore your mind and body to a healthy state so you
can heal the problem.
What to Expect During
a Reiki Treatment
Each person will
experience Reiki in different ways, there is no right or wrong feeling.
Most people experience a feeling of deep peaceful relaxation. Reiki
treatments encourage the release of built up tension and anxiety. Some
people report feeling very hot or cold, or a pulsating heat or tingling
sensation coming from the practitioners hands. Others have said that
symptoms of acute or chronic pain, allergies and other infirmities
diminish or completely disappear.
In a treatment, you are
fully dressed and lying down. A blanket may cover you to keep you warm
and comfortable. The Reiki practitioner will place their hands on your
body in a series of positions, each position lasting between 3-5
minutes. To get the most out of your treatment you will be asked to
close your eyes and focus on your breath to help your body achieve a
deep level of relaxation.
What to Expect After
a Reiki Treatment
Most Reiki treatments
last about an hour, after you will be given time to compose yourself
before you head back out into the world. Some people feel so relaxed
they say they are “spaced out” and others report feeling renewed,
refreshed and filled with a new energy. It is recommended that you
rehydrate after any type of body treatment.
Are There Side
Effects With Reiki?
Most of the time you
will feel relaxed and uplifted by a Reiki treatment, however, sometimes
a person may notice they are experiencing detoxifying symptoms. Examples
of this are sweating, excretion, excess mucus production, sneezing or
coughing, even an overwhelming need to sleep. This is a normal part of
the healing process and drinking water can help restore normal function.
